Dead Lakes

Wewahitchka is famous for two things, Dead Lakes and Tupelo Honey. Fishermen were the first to realize Dead Lakes along with the Apalachicola, Chipola and Brothers River around Wewa has some of the best freshwater fishing in the south.  Peter Fonda’s award winning performance in the movie “Ulee’s Gold” put Tupelo Honey and Gulf County on the map.

On Saturday, May 19 from 9am to 4pm the city of Wewahitchka invites you to join them for the Tupelo Honey Festival.  Tupelo honey comes from the tupelo gum tree. Located in the southeast United States, these trees are mostly found in Northwest Florida, especially in the Chipola River region.  Tupelo Honey is very light in color and has a delicate sweet flavor, making it a favorite of honey connoisseurs.  According to the old folks it has many medicinal properties as well, it’s antioxidants are said to reduce colon damage in people who have colitis. It may also help improve digestion, strengthen immunity, and lower cholesterol. This festival grows larger every year.  Last year there were 40 some odd booths of arts, crafts, food and animal rides.  This year there are over 60!  Lake Alice Park will be alive with music and vendors of all kinds, including the famous tupelo honey.

Port St Joe

Here on our section of Hwy 98 this week we have watched these amazingly talented painters! They are taking part in the 10 days of the Plein Air Paintout.  They are blessed with the eye to take in all the beauty that we as residents sometimes forget to enjoy.  However, we are fortunate enough to be able to watch such creativity unfold in front of us. This young lady has her eye on the woodland area around the bay shore.  Let’s see what some of the other artist are doing.

This gentleman perferred to do his paintings on a smaller canvas.  He took time from the tiny strokes to talk abit to the folks admiring his craft.  A downtown Port St. Joe business was his subject.  What a great job he does!

These talented folks were so intent on capturing their subject that neither the heat or the constant talking people surrounding them seem to stop them from their expression. This young man liked the cars parked on Reid Ave.  His art was done in a chalk medium.

This lady seemed to be drawn to the contrasting colors of this building and the inviting chairs out front.  What an amazing bunch of artist these folks are, if you didn’t get to watch them, it’s okay.  They will be back later this year.  Make a date to go check them out, you will look at your surroundings a bit differently.

The Great Plein Air Paint Out

The Great Plein Air Paint Out is a 10-day open air painting event featuring nationally recognized Plein Air artists capturing  Forgotten Coast Real Estate on canvas. Highlights of this event include artist demonstrations, viewing displays in multiple venues, students art of the day, artist receptions,and the Grand Patron’s Party. More than 20 nationally acclaimed artists will gather on Florida’s Forgotten Coast on May 3rd to participate in the 7th annual Florida’s Forgotten Coast Plein Air Invitational, America’s Great Paint-Out, May 3-13, 2012. Painters will set up their easels and pull out their brushes to document the landscape and culture of this last vestige of authentic “Old Florida” – the coastal stretch of scenic Hwy 98  between Mexico Beach and the Apalachicola, St George Island area.

Property Sales this past week here along the fabulous Forgotten Coast of Florida are just like the weather and today it is HOT!  15 Properties sold from the emerald waters of Mexico Beach to the “tipity top” of St.George Island - Included were 2 Mexico Beach Homes,  1 Port St. Joe Home and 1 Port St. Joe Properties (vacant lots), 2 Cape San Blas Properties (vacant lots), 1 Apalachicola Homes, 3 St. George Island Beach Homes and 3 St. George Island Properties (vacant lots), and 1 Wewahitchka home and 1 Wewa property(vacant lot). Of these sales, 9 transactions closed due to a REO/Distressed/Short Sale/Foreclosure situation and 6 buyers paid CASH!  Those 9 buyers using conventional loans will find these rates,  30yrs @3.75,  20yrs @3.625% and 3.0% over 15yrs.

Future Runner at Cape San Blas

This Triathlon, Duathlon weekend starts off with a Relay for Life at the Port St. Joe High Friday night, the event is scheduled to start at 7pm.  Relay For Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Let’s go out and support our participants. Then Saturday, April 28th, athletes from around the world will converge on the Forgotten Coast. They will run, bike, and swim in a race of speed and endurance for this triathlon sanctioned event. Well marked courses follow along the beautiful white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. After the race the fun continues at the Veteran’s Memorial Park of Beacon Hill, on Hwy 98, with food and drinks to celebrate the day!

Make your own Memories

This is the weekend for making your own fun here on Florida’s Forgotten Coast!  Go fishing, go parasailing, go out to eat at a new spot, or just sit back and relax.  All along the  highway 98 real estate from Mexico Beach to Port St. Joe you can just pull over on the shoulder of the road and walk down the sugar white sandy beaches and into the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Remember to keep the kids hydrated while they run barefoot into the shallow bluewater.  Parasailing can be found on Highway 98 in Mexico Beach.  Make sure you hold tight, anchor yourself to the boat!  Check out a new spot to enjoy a meal. Gulf County is blessed with some of the best seafood resturants, after all we have great local fisheries.  Or maybe slide over to the bayside fishing and catch your own!

The sales activity for the week is still on the upswing.  There were a total of 20 sales, 9 homes and 11 lots (vacant).  3 homes in St. George Island sold this week.  2 homes in Mexico Beach/St. Joe Beach sold.  There was 1 home sold in Apalachicola, 1 in Carrabelle, 1 in East Point, and 1 in Port St. Joe.  3 lots (vacant) sold in Carrabelle, 2 lots (vacant) in Cape San Blas, 2 lots (vacant) in Port St. Joe, 1 lot (vacant) in Indian Pass, 1 lot (vacant) in Mexico Beach/St. Joe Beach, and 1 lot (vacant) in St. George Island.  There were only 5 REO/Distressed/Bank Owned/Short Sales this week.  9 buyers paid cash this week while 11 took advantage of conventional financing.
