During Cape San Blas long history the main inhabitant has been the lighthouse keeper. The first lighthouse was erected in 1851 and it was said the light could be for 20 miles in either direction. That lighthouse was felled by a gale in a storm later in 1851. The next Lighthouse went up in 1856, but it a few short months it was brought down by a severe storm. The waves were reportedly 14 foot above the normal tide.
The third Light house was built in 1859. In 1862, it was damaged by the troops aboard the Union ship USS Kingfisher. During this attack the keeper’s house was destroyed. In 1865, the house was rebuilt and a new light was put in place. For several years congress talked about the shifting shoreline around the light house. Then in 1882, it was destroyed by a storm.
In 1885, when the current and last Lighthouse was rebuilt it was only a skeleton tower. It was suppose to be able to withstand the storms and shifting shoreline. I has stood over a hundred years as proof that all the previous problems are a thing of the past. They also built a second caretakers house at that time so I guess that was the beginning of the settlement of Cape San Blas. Since then there have been millions of people who have enjoyed the white sands, the whispers of the gulls, and the warmth on the skin. Some just visiting some come to stay.
